1. Why have a History Discussion Board on the MZF website?
For years, the MZF has maintained a consensus that we should initiate a “History of NA in the Midwest” project, but while everyone agreed the idea had merit, we had no idea where to start. Many areas and regions have already begun developing narrative histories and gathering archival materials. We didn’t want spend time and energy looking into things which had already been researched but we also didn’t want to leave anything out. Starting with a dialogue about what individuals and service bodies already have in place or are working toward seems to be a logical place to start.
2. What does the MZF History project hope to accomplish?
As the discussion develops, we hope get a sense of how NA history is being documented throughout the Midwest. Once we establish a dialogue, we can begin archiving electronic copies of current history information which has already been collected. Then, depending on how our conscience develops, we can package the information and post it on our website or store it electronically and make it available on request.
3. Why now?
While NA has experienced phenomenal growth in the Midwest US since the late 80’s, our history goes back much farther and some of our older members have already passed on. With no documented oral history and no systematic method for gathering and storing archival materials, much of our history may be lost in the near future.
4. What’s next?
Over the course of the weekend MZF meeting at WSNAC on October 16-18th, I will gather some input and develop a list of specific questions/discussion topics to get things rolling. |
